Best Men's Aftershave in the UK (2026)

By DealSnap team · Published 2 Oct 2026

Armani Acqua di Gi, Bleu de Chanel and Dior Sauvage bottles

Buying aftershave is harder than it should be. You can't smell anything online, the shop counters are a fog of testers, and the same bottle can cost £60 in one shop and £90 in the next. If it's a present, you're also guessing what someone else will like.

We compared the best-selling men's fragrances in the UK on price, scent and how long they last, using the brands' own notes, retailer listings and what wearers report. Here are eight worth buying, from a £28.13 bottle to a £108.80 classic, with a gift set for Christmas. Every price was checked at a UK retailer on the day we published.

TL;DR: the short answer

  • Best overall: Dior Sauvage EDT, £93.50. Fresh, peppery and the UK's best-selling men's fragrance.
  • Best for work and smart occasions: Bleu de Chanel EDP, £108.80. Woody, polished and hard to dislike.
  • Best fresh summer scent: Armani Acqua di Giò EDT, £98. The clean, aquatic classic.
  • Best all-rounder for younger buyers: YSL Y EDP, £86.25. Apple and sage over warm woods.
  • Best for nights out: Rabanne 1 Million EDT, £63.99. Sweet, spicy and loud.
  • Best budget designer pick: Davidoff Cool Water EDT, £28.13 for 125ml. The cheapest bottle here.
  • Best light, unisex scent: Calvin Klein CK One EDT, £42.75. Clean, citrusy and easy to share.
  • Best gift set: Boss Bottled EDT gift set, £71.40, with a travel spray and shower gel.

What to look for in a men's fragrance

  • Concentration. Eau de parfum (EDP) usually lasts longer than eau de toilette (EDT), because it contains more perfume oil. Traditional "aftershave" splash is weaker again. More oil isn't always better: a fresh EDT can suit hot days and offices.
  • Scent family. Fresh and aquatic scents (Acqua di Giò, Cool Water) suit daytime and summer. Woody and aromatic ones (Bleu de Chanel, Y) work all year. Sweet and spicy ones (1 Million) are for evenings and winter.
  • Longevity and projection. Longevity is how long you can smell it. Projection is how far it reaches other people. Both vary with skin and weather, so treat any hours quoted as a rough guide.
  • Price per 10ml. Bigger bottles are almost always cheaper per ml. Our table works it out for you.
  • Try before you commit. Spray a tester on your wrist, not a paper strip, and wait an hour. The opening fades fast. What's left is what you'll actually smell like.
  • Refills. Sauvage and the current Acqua di Giò come in refillable bottles, which can bring the cost down over time.

The best men's aftershaves

1. Dior Sauvage EDT: best overall (£93.50)

Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette 100ml bottle

If you've stood near a man in a pub in the last ten years, you've probably smelled Sauvage. John Lewis's listing cites NPD sales data naming it the UK's best-selling fragrance in 2024. You can see why. It opens bright, with Calabrian bergamot and pepper. Then it settles into a dry, slightly salty base built on Ambroxan, with cedar and labdanum underneath.

Fragrantica users rate it as a strong performer, with many reporting 8 to 14 hours of wear and big projection for the first few hours. That reach is part of the appeal and also the main complaint. It's so widely worn that some people find it predictable. If you want to stand out, look further down this list. If you want something almost everyone likes, this is it.

  • Pros: crowd-pleasing; long-lasting; refillable bottle
  • Cons: very common; can be overpowering if over-applied
  • Best for: one bottle that works almost everywhere

Where to buy: John Lewis (£93.50, 100ml). Also 60ml for £79.

2. Bleu de Chanel EDP: best for work and smart occasions (£108.80)

Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum 100ml bottle

Chanel calls this an aromatic-woody fragrance with ambery and musky notes, which is a fair description of a scent that smells expensive without shouting. Grapefruit, mint and pink pepper open it. Ginger, nutmeg and jasmine follow, and it dries down to incense, cedar and sandalwood.

It's the one to choose for an office, an interview or a wedding, where Sauvage's volume would be too much. Fragrantica users are split on performance. Many report a solid six to eight hours, but some find it fades close to the skin quickly. It's also the dearest bottle here. Shop around: John Lewis was about £20 cheaper than The Perfume Shop when we checked.

  • Pros: refined and versatile; very hard to dislike; works with a suit
  • Cons: most expensive here; performance varies from skin to skin
  • Best for: professional settings and smart events

Where to buy: John Lewis (£108.80, 100ml). Also 50ml for £92.

3. Armani Acqua di Giò EDT: best fresh summer scent (£98)

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò Eau de Toilette bottle

Acqua di Giò made the clean, sea-air style famous, and the current eau de toilette keeps it simple. Marine notes and bergamot up top, a heart of jasmine, rosemary and cedarwood, and white musk with patchouli to finish. It smells like a fresh shirt on a warm day.

Armani now sells several versions, including Profondo and a stronger Parfum, so check the box. This is the standard refillable eau de toilette. It has a 4.13 rating from about 13,000 Fragrantica users, who typically report five to seven hours, though some find it soft after a while. That gentleness suits daytime and hot weather. Reapply in the evening if you need to.

  • Pros: clean and inoffensive; brilliant in warm weather; refillable
  • Cons: lighter longevity than the EDPs here; several confusingly similar versions
  • Best for: summer, holidays and daytime

Where to buy: John Lewis (£98, 100ml). Also 50ml for £73.

4. YSL Y EDP: best all-rounder for younger buyers (£86.25)

Yves Saint Laurent Y Eau de Parfum 100ml bottle

Y opens with green apple, bergamot and ginger, which gives it a bright, modern start. Underneath it's a fougère, the classic barbershop structure of lavender, sage and geranium, warmed with amberwood, frankincense and tonka bean. It feels fresher than Bleu de Chanel and warmer than Acqua di Giò, which is why it suits so many occasions.

At £86.25, down from £115 at LOOKFANTASTIC, it's also the cheapest of the four big designer names here. On performance, wearers are again divided. Some report eight hours or more, others only two or three. It's a good first "proper" fragrance for someone in their twenties.

  • Pros: fresh-meets-warm balance; works day and night; well discounted
  • Cons: performance reports vary widely; popular with the same crowd as Sauvage
  • Best for: a versatile everyday scent, or a first designer fragrance

Where to buy: LOOKFANTASTIC (£86.25, 100ml)

5. Rabanne 1 Million EDT: best for nights out (£63.99)

Rabanne 1 Million Eau de Toilette 100ml gold bottle

The gold-bar bottle tells you what to expect. 1 Million is sweet, spicy and confident: blood mandarin and peppermint at the start, then rose and cinnamon, over a base of blonde leather and amber. It's at its best on a cold night out. In a warm office it can be too much.

This is the brand formerly known as Paco Rabanne, so older bottles and listings may still use that name. At £63.99, down from £94 at The Perfume Shop, it's good value for how long it lasts. Use one or two sprays rather than four.

  • Pros: long-lasting; distinctive; well priced right now
  • Cons: very sweet; easy to overdo; not an office scent
  • Best for: evenings, parties and winter

Where to buy: The Perfume Shop (£63.99, 100ml). Also £83 at The Fragrance Shop.

6. Davidoff Cool Water EDT: best budget designer pick (£28.13)

Davidoff Cool Water Eau de Toilette bottle

Cool Water came out in 1988 and helped set the template for the fresh men's scents that followed, Acqua di Giò among them. Peppermint and lavender open it. Then come geranium, oakmoss and sandalwood, finishing on amber and musk. It's brisk, clean and a bit old-school, in a good way.

The value is hard to beat. Superdrug had the 125ml bottle at £28.13, down from £75, which works out at about £2.25 per 10ml and makes it the cheapest bottle in this guide. Don't expect it to last all day. Keep it for the gym bag or the desk drawer and top up.

  • Pros: excellent value; a genuine classic; big 125ml bottle
  • Cons: smells a little dated next to modern fresh scents; needs reapplying
  • Best for: a cheap daily scent with a designer name

Where to buy: Superdrug (£28.13, 125ml)

7. Calvin Klein CK One EDT: best light, unisex scent (£42.75)

Calvin Klein CK One Eau de Toilette 100ml bottle

CK One launched in 1994 as a scent for anyone, and it's still officially unisex. It's light and citrusy: pineapple, mandarin and papaya, a soft floral middle, then sandalwood, amber and musk. It reads as "clean" rather than "aftershave", which is exactly why people keep buying it.

Superdrug had the 100ml at £42.75, down from £57. It doesn't last long or project far, so it's best as a light morning spray or something to share. If you want people to notice, choose something else.

  • Pros: inoffensive; works for anyone; often discounted
  • Cons: short-lived; quiet; not a "men's" scent in the usual sense
  • Best for: a light everyday scent, or a shared bathroom bottle

Where to buy: Superdrug (£42.75, 100ml). Also £45.60 at LOOKFANTASTIC.

8. Boss Bottled EDT gift set: best gift set (£71.40)

Hugo Boss Bottled Eau de Toilette gift set with travel spray and shower gel

Boss Bottled is one of the safest gifts in men's fragrance: apple at the top, geranium and cinnamon in the middle, and sandalwood, cedar and vetiver at the base. It's warm, slightly sweet and easy to wear, office included.

Boots' set includes the 100ml eau de toilette, a 10ml travel spray and a 100ml shower gel, for £71.40 (down from £84). For comparison, the 100ml bottle on its own was £64.61 at LOOKFANTASTIC. That means the set costs about £7 more for the travel spray, the gel and a box that is ready to wrap.

  • Pros: ready to give; travel spray included; a well-liked, easy scent
  • Cons: little saving over the bottle alone; the scent is common
  • Best for: Christmas, birthdays and Father's Day

Where to buy: Boots (£71.40)

EDT, EDP or aftershave: what's the difference?

The names describe how much perfume oil is in the bottle. As a rough guide, eau de parfum holds around 15 to 20 per cent, eau de toilette around 5 to 15 per cent, and traditional aftershave splash only a few per cent, often with alcohol to soothe skin after shaving. More oil generally means a longer-lasting, richer scent, and a higher price.

In everyday UK use, "aftershave" just means men's fragrance, so most people buying aftershave actually want an EDT or EDP. Neither is simply better. EDT versions are often brighter and fresher, and EDP versions warmer and deeper, even with the same name on the bottle.

Buying aftershave as a gift

If you don't know someone's taste, play it safe. Fresh and woody scents such as Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel and Boss Bottled please most people. Sweet, loud ones such as 1 Million divide opinion. Check what's already on his bathroom shelf. The same brand's newer flanker, or something in the same scent family, is a safer bet than a complete change.

Gift sets cost a little more than the bottle alone, but they come boxed and often include a travel spray, which is genuinely useful. Most department stores and fragrance shops offer gift receipts, and some exchange unopened fragrances. Ask before you buy, because opened bottles usually can't be returned.

When is the best time to buy aftershave?

Fragrance is usually among the bigger Black Friday discounts in late November, and searches for men's aftershave nearly double in November and December. Shops fight over gift buyers, so prices often fall between late November and Christmas. Boxing Day and the January sales clear leftover gift sets cheaply.

Outside those times, Superdrug and Boots regularly run half-price offers on older designer scents. Cool Water was more than 60 per cent off when we checked. Prices also differ a lot between shops for the same bottle. Bleu de Chanel was about £20 apart between two retailers, so it pays to compare.

Aftershave questions

How long should aftershave last?

Expect a few hours from a fresh eau de toilette and six to eight or more from a stronger eau de parfum, but skin type, temperature and how much you spray all change that. Wearers report very different results for the same bottle, so don't rely on any single number.

How can I make my fragrance last longer?

Apply it to moisturised skin straight after a shower, on the neck, chest and wrists, and don't rub your wrists together. Storing the bottle somewhere cool and dark, not on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom, also keeps it smelling right for longer.

Is a more expensive fragrance always better?

No. Price reflects the brand, packaging and concentration as much as quality. Cool Water at under £3 per 10ml is a genuine classic, and some £100 bottles last no longer than cheaper ones. Choose the scent you like, then find the best price for it.

Is it worth buying a smaller bottle?

Smaller bottles cost more per ml, but they're sensible when you're trying something new or buying a gift you're not sure about. If you already know you love a scent, the 100ml bottle is better value.

Our verdict

If you want one fragrance that almost everyone likes, buy Dior Sauvage at £93.50. For something more refined for work and smart occasions, Bleu de Chanel is worth the extra. In summer, Acqua di Giò is hard to beat. YSL Y is the best-value designer all-rounder at its current price.

For nights out, 1 Million is the obvious pick. On a budget, Cool Water costs under £30 for a 125ml bottle, and CK One is a lighter, unisex alternative. If it's a present, the Boss Bottled gift set is ready to wrap.

Fragrance prices move quickly, especially in the run-up to Christmas, so check the live price before you buy. You'll find current fragrance deals from UK retailers below this guide.
